Central to host acclaimed performance of Handel’s Messiah

November 9th, 2009

As Christmas approaches, so also does Arcady’s annual and much celebrated performance of Handel’s Messiah. Arcady’s 2009 tour will bring the performance to Cambridge on Saturday, November 28, at 7:30 pm, at Central Presbyterian Church – 7 Queen’s Square. Tickets (20 adults/$10 students) can be obtained by calling the church office at 519-623-1080. Tickets are also available from each Elder.

Central Presbyterian Church, located on the banks of the Grand River in the heart of historic Galt, has a long history of hosting world-class classical performances in its beautiful sanctuary. Proceeds from this performance will be used to ensure many more years of great performances. Specifically, the ongoing slate roof tile replacement project will be the beneficiary of the evening’s proceeds.

Messiah, the great oratorio by Georg Frideric Handel, is a work that stands above and beyond any other in the history of music. No other work has captured the hearts and imaginations of so many people, from so many backgrounds, and for so many generations. Messiah, written in 1741 to the wordbook compiled by librettist Charles Jennens, has over the years become an essential part of the celebration of Christmas in both Europe and North America. No other large work has been so closely linked to a specific season as Messiah has been to the season of Christmas.

Arcady was established in order to encourage outstanding young musicians by providing for them a bridge between their student and professional performing careers. This touring ensemble, mandated and directed by Ronald Beckett, includes exceptionally talented and motivated singers and instrumentalists who seek to broaden their performing experience. Some of these performers have already long established themselves as professional performers; the others are destined to achieve this level.
